1. National Space Centre
If you want a closer look at the stars, then you only need to drive to Leicester! It's home to the National Space Centre, where you can look around the UK's largest planetarium or embark on a 3D spaceflight simulator. The main attraction is the Rocket Tower, which is a 42-metre, semi-transparent structure, which was design to house a pair of famous rockets, Blue Streak and Thor-Able. In the Rocket Tower there is a Gagarin Experience which lets you sit inside the space capsule which took a Russian cosmonaut into orbit, it also features a real moon rock and a cinema which plays the first ever sci-fi film.
2. Star Gazing
Join a group of guests for an unforgettable stargazing night. Enjoy the dark skies away from the light pollution of the towns and cities. You'll be joined by an expert guide, and you can use advanced telescopes and binoculars to see stars, constellations, galaxies and more! Here space travel can become somewhat of a reality with a tour of the Milky Way, an adventure across the solar system, with a great finish of enjoying your favourite Sci-Fi movie from a bean bag. Get on board and explore the spaceship, which has an interactive cockpit, then choose a intergalactic treat from the space station before settling down to watch a Star Wars or Goonies classic, or if you prefer something more modern recent listing have included The Greatest Showman and The Avengers.
4. Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre
The University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre is there to help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. At this centre you will be able to see the world's famous Lovell Telescope – which is one of the biggest and most powerful radio telescopes. You can also explore the wonders of the Universe inside the Space Pavilion where you can discover how Jodrell Bank scientists use radio telescopes. A great day out as a family!
5. The ArcelorMittal Orbit
Feel like you're travelling through space and time with the UK's tallest sculpture and the world's longest and tallest tunnel slide. With enough steel to make 265 double-decker buses, the ArcelorMittal Orbit offers 20-mile views over the Queen Elizabeth Park and the London Skyline. The slide is 178m long, as you travel you'll pass through light and dark sections with the dramatic skyscape passing by. On your way down you will circle the Orbit 12 times, with a straight 50m run back down to earth.
